Princeton Revises Winter Vacation Housing Guidelines
Students participating in the continuous housing program and some student-athletes will be allowed to stay on campus for the next winter break, according to an email sent to all undergraduates by College Dean Jill Dolan and Vice-President. president for campus life Rochelle Calhoun.
The October 29 memo explained that “direct access to campus dormitories will be removed from Thursday, December 23 at noon. Proximity access to the dormitories will be re-established from Friday January 7, 2022 ”for students not part of the aforementioned program.
All undergraduates who live in family accommodation, are part of the transfer program, have “high financial need or identity issues that make it impossible to obtain alternative accommodation” or have been declared independent by Financial aid purposes are eligible for the Continuing Housing Program.
This new procedure differs from previous years. Prior to 2019, no registration or application was required to stay on campus during winter vacation. In 2019, any student could register on a housing portal for winter holidays in order to stay on campus.
This year, eligible students must apply for the program through the Princeton Services Portal. The portal will remain open until Friday, November 19 at 5 p.m. Students currently living in family accommodation and those previously authorized in continuous accommodation must register online.
“The form itself seems strict and impractical for no good reason,” said Marlon Escobar ’23, a student who previously stayed on campus during the break. “I guess the University has something in mind regarding Covid testing or even staffing for the meal plan they’re going to have, but having restrictions like this just seems unfriendly.”
Dolan and Calhoun clarified that students participating in varsity track and field competitions during the break are not required to apply through the portal but should make the necessary arrangements by contacting their coaches.
Students enrolled in the program will not have to pay for accommodation and will have access to a meal program.

The winter vacation will begin on December 22, 2021 and will end on January 8, 2022. The vacation will be followed by the winter session, which will run from Monday January 10, 2022 to Sunday January 23, 2022. Spring courses start on following Monday.
