Organizational advice for the start of the school year

CHARLOTTE, NC – Now that summer is drawing to a close, it’s time to start implementing some new back-to-school organizational strategies. Laurie Martin, Certified Professional Organizer with Simplicity Organizers, has some back-to-school planning tips that will help you get off to a good start.

Tip 1: Include your kids in the preparation process to go back to school. Organize a family reunion to create a plan of what needs to be accomplished over the next few weeks, things like upcoming appointments, needed school supplies, and meal planning.

Tip 2: Invest in a physical calendar. Whether it’s paper or a whiteboard, post a calendar that the whole family can see. Start noting important upcoming events. It is really important for children of all ages to see a month at a glance.

Tip 3: Make a checklist for your school supplies and create a space. Schools usually provide a list of recommended school supplies. Take inventory of what you have first. No need to spend more money on what you already have. Make sure you take your list (and your kids) with you when you shop. Each child should be responsible for shopping for their own supplies. Create a place near where your kids do their homework, to store all school supplies. )

Tip 4: Establish a system for school papers and works of art. Works of art and papers can quickly flood an entire surface. Set up your system before the first day of school. All the pieces of paper that arrive from school cannot or should not be saved. Set up a bulletin board or a special place in your home to celebrate the best work of each week. Throw out the rest, file what’s important, or store the work in a bin that will need to be purged at the end of the year. Consider taking a photo of the artwork or school projects. A good rule of thumb is to keep no more than 10 pieces that represent the best this year.

Tip 5: Plan your meals in advance. Prevent emergency races by planning ahead! Keep the pantry and refrigerator stocked with healthy choices. Meet with your kids to plan lunch and dinner ideas for the month. You can print a free monthly calendar at a glance on our website at

Tip 6: Help your children organize their spaces BEFORE the start of the school year. Don’t organize yourself for them, otherwise they will never learn. Backpacks, desks, bedrooms and closets all need to be walked at least twice a year. Eliminating unnecessary clutter will ensure a fresh start to the new school year. If you and / or your child continue to feel overwhelmed, it may be time to seek professional help. Simplicity also offers the organization of workshops on Wednesdays at 10:30 am on various themes.
