Manchester United’s new 2022-23 away kit combines heritage with new details

Hot on the heels of their new home kit, Manchester United have rolled out their even newer away kit for the 2022-23 season.

In the same vein as the home shirt launched last week, United’s latest away kit is a tribute to some of the club’s most famous sets over the years.

The home shirt featured subtle designs inspired by United kits dating from the early 1980s through to the 2000s, and the away shirt is no different.

Firstly, the classic white base returns for the first time since 2015-16, having been used as a secondary color by United since the early 1900s.

United have had many white kits since then, although the 2022-23 vintage certainly looks the most like those worn in the mid-1970s, 1980s and even up to the iconic “Sharp Viewcam” stripe worn on the road by the triple winner of 1999.

Two-tone black and red trim ensure all three of the club’s famous base colors are visible at once, with the shoulder stripes also getting a multi-color revamp for the first time.

The distinctive collar and cuff trim are black with red and white diamonds woven into the thick band while a “double helix” graphic is embedded into the white fabric – a very on-the-nose visual metaphor intended to represent the importance in United history. DNA.

The twisted strands visible in the helix weave also reflect the three-pronged philosophy that United have tried to work and operate over the past 100 years: youth, courage and success.

Obviously, youth and courage have been a little easier to come by in recent years, but with Erik ten Hag at the helm, a brave new dawn may well be about to dawn at Old Trafford as we let’s head into the new season.

Maybe.
