Heavy sleet warning
Emitted when a period of sleet is expected to produce ice accumulations of 1 “or greater, or significantly disrupt travel or utilities.

Heavy snow warning
Emitted when snow is expected to accumulate 4 inches or more in 12 hours, or 6 inches or more in 24 hours.

Winter storm warning
Issued for a winter weather event in which there is more than one hazard present, and one of the warning criteria listed above should be met. For example, it would be issued if 5 inches of snow were expected in 12 hours, with occasional sleet mixing. It is typically issued for heavy snowfall with strong winds of 25 to 34 mph which will cause snow to blow and drift. A winter storm watch is issued when these conditions can be met 12 to 48 hours in the future.

Blizzard warning
Issued for sustained winds or frequent gusts greater than or equal to 35 mph accompanied by falls and / or blowing snow, frequently reducing visibility to less than 1/4 mile for three hours or more. A Blizzard watch is issued when these conditions can be met 12 to 48 hours in the future.

Pictured left are Ross Johnstone of WCCTV who provided the CCTV camera, City Council Operations Manager Matt Adamson-Drage and Aran Craig of TopSparks who helped set up the camera.

A NEW security camera has been installed on the waterfront following several deliberate breakage of the new glass balustrade.

Four of the glass panels surrounding the flat roof area above Marine Parade have shattered since they were installed last July.

The first breakage was caused by a rock propelled by one of our mowers, but the last three incidents were all deliberate acts of vandalism.

A CCTV camera has now been installed directly on the roof to help deter further incidents.

With exceptional zoom capabilities and an infrared mode for low light, there shouldn’t be any problems pinpointing the culprits if further mishaps occur.

The good news is that although the panels were shattered – at a cost of around £ 5,000 to replace – the glass largely behaved as expected, shattering into small, blunt fragments.

Fortunately, no one was injured in any of these incidents.

There were concerns locally about the potential danger to the public and whether the type of glass used was suitable for the location.

We engaged an independent expert to advise us on the suitability of the glazing, who confirmed that the glass used is perfectly suited to the area and the potential uses of the roof.

The consultant, Richard Kells, described the barrier system as “in place” and confirmed that high-rise buildings in London would use the same type of glass.

There have been calls locally to replace the panels with laminated glass, but the consultant said this type of glass was now banned following the Grenfell fire.

Speaking at a council meeting last week, Mr Kells said: “You don’t want to waste more money putting in laminated glass and then possibly breaking building rules which could change.

“After Grenfell, the only option is what the board currently has. You have a very good barrier system compared to other buildings I have inspected.

“It’s perfect from a compliance standpoint.

“So far, in our experience, there have been no deaths from falling glass. Injuries from falling glass are quite rare.

With the glass now having an expert seal of approval and a security camera installed to deter or catch vandals, we can now start thinking about how best to use the roof area.

WONKA fever about to strike Lyme Regis!

WARNER Brothers will be shooting scenes around town for “Wonka,” a family story that reimagines the youth of one of Roald Dahl’s most beloved characters, Willy Wonka, before he got his chocolate factory.

The board has been in talks with Warner Brothers since early summer regarding the production crew using sections of our parking lot in Monmouth Beach.

All shoots will take place in the harbor and the Cobb area on Monday October 11 and Tuesday October 12, the first daytime shoot and the second night shoot, as well as rehearsals on Saturday October 9.

The production crew will begin prepping the Cobb starting Monday, October 4, dressing it up like the set and prepping it for filming.

On filming days, public access to the Cobb will be restricted, although full access will be maintained while the set is being dressed.

Production vehicles, filming equipment and a marquee will be located in sections of the Monmouth Beach parking lot on either side of the Boat Building Academy, meaning there will be less public parking available during filming.

While public access is maintained at all times, there may be temporary inconvenience while vehicles associated with filming are moved to or off the site and an on-site management team and temporary traffic control will handle this. .

Council considers new ways to deter seagulls

WE ARE LOOKING for new ways to deter seagulls after another season of lingering complaints.

Complaints have included seagulls stealing lunches and ice cream, cutting faces as they grabbed food and fouling people.

In 2017, the council launched its Seagull Action Plan, which aimed to mitigate bird nuisance through public education and awareness.

The plan included delivering a flyer to residents and visitors of Lyme Regis with advice on wild bird law and how to deter seagulls from nesting on properties.

It also involved placing signs on the waterfront to discourage people from feeding the seagulls.

This was further supported by the introduction of a public space protection ordinance by the former West Dorset District Council, which made it a civil offense to intentionally feed seagulls.

Our law enforcement officers can issue fixed penalty notices and a £ 100 fine to anyone caught intentionally feeding seagulls, although they have found it very difficult to catch people red-handed or to prove it was intentional.

But the benefits of this campaign have faded and we must now seek alternative measures to ensure public safety.

One of the metrics we’re looking at is an audible bird scarer, where ultrasound, distress bird calls and predator calls are used to disperse groups of seagulls. It is hoped that this technique can be used as part of a coordinated plan.

The details of this plan are not yet clear, but we want to start work now in the hopes of seeing results before the nesting season in May and June.

The waterfront guardrails will be replaced this fall

WORK will take place this fall to replace the historic cast iron grates along the Marine Parade.

The railings, which date back to the late 19th or early 20th century, at the east end of Marine Parade are in poor condition and have been repaired over the years with pipes or scaffolding posts.

The council initially started this project in 2017, but encountered planning problems, which meant that the works could not take place so far.

The works will take place from the beginning of November after the school holidays and should be completed by the second week of December. It will involve the replacement of approximately 220 meters of guardrails and 98 posts.

We will try to minimize disruption, but it will require some management of vehicle and pedestrian movements on the wagon route and the maritime parade during the works.

Access and parking will be maintained at all times, but it may be necessary for pedestrians to occasionally walk on the lower level to maintain a safe distance, or for short sections of Cart Road to be temporarily cordoned off to vehicles.

New online reservation system for beach cabins

We will be taking beach cabin reservations for 2022 soon.

The office has been inundated with requests from people wanting to book a cabin for next year and we have now posted more details on the booking process.

Our online reservation system has been improved, people will now be able to add multiple reservations to their cart, and Lyme Regis residents will be able to claim their Gateway Card discount on the website.

We will continue to prioritize Lyme Regis residents so that we can book any of our annual packages, summer or winter, before they are released to the general public the next day.

The priority day for residents is Tuesday, October 12, and the main reservation is Wednesday, October 13.

We encourage everyone to use the online reservation system, if possible, as it is the fastest and easiest way to check availability, book and pay.

All the information you need on beach hut bookings for 2022 is available on our website at www.lymeregistowncouncil.gov.uk/book-a-beach-hut

Big Sky returns for Season 2 on ABC, with Jenny (Katheryn Winnick) and Cassie (Kylie Bunbury) trying to cope with their near-death ordeal from the previous season, but the killer who nearly took his own life is still on the loose.

Big Sky season 2 has undergone some changes. The second season welcomes several new cast members, and the drama follows Jenny and Cassie as they go their separate ways, until they cross paths again at a crime scene. While the new season’s tale will find the duo investigating a new threat, a handful of their old enemies have returned to wreak more havoc – and, as is customary with Big Sky, murder is still on the menu.

In this article, we’ll cover Big Sky season 2 release date, original cast and new faces, and what Season 2 needs to install for us. Thus, the binge-watchers join a fun ride.

Big Sky Season 2 release date and trailer

Big Sky Season 2 returns September 30 at 10 p.m. PT on ABC. For those who wish to stream the show online, episodes will be available Friday morning on Hulu.

ABC has revealed the first full trailer for Big Sky season 2 taunting a big secret at the heart of Season 2, while also introducing several of the show’s new cast and concluding with a baffling goodbye to Geraghty’s Ronald.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XIGtABXpcLg

Big Sky Season 2 Plot and Story

Big Sky is inspired by the series of novels written by CJ Box. During the first season, we saw private investigator Cody Hoyt and Cassie Dewell join forces with Cody’s ex-wife Jenny Hoyt to search for two sisters who were kidnapped by a sinister truck driver from the Montana highway. The trio soon learn that these two aren’t the only ones missing.

The trio are at a serious disadvantage and must find the person responsible for the girls’ disappearance as time slowly passes through their hands.

Investigators Jerrie Kennedy and Mark Lindor, as well as Sheriff Tubb eventually managed to identify the driver of the truck as Ronald Bergman. What they didn’t know is that Ronald Bergman had an ally in Scarlett Leyendecker, allowing the two to go their separate ways when the team arrives to stop him. Ronald’s accomplices in a trafficking union ambush the police vehicle as they search for the remains of Ronald’s victims, allowing Ronald to escape and regroup with Scarlett.

Big Sky Season 2 Cast

Prior to Season 1, John Carroll Lynch and Ryan Phillippe were the two most popular faces on the show. It’s a shame none of them survived. Although they can both return to the show through flashbacks or separate storytelling techniques. This paved the way for Kylie Bunbury and Katheryn Winnick to take the helm as Cassie Dewell and Jenny Hoyt respectively, in the second installment.

Season 2 cast includes Brian Geraghty, Janina Gavankar, Omar Metwally, Anja Savic, and Dedee Pfeiffer. Jesse James Keitel, who appeared in season one as a regular, will return in season two.

In addition, the new cast member includes The Sopranos alum Jamie-Lynn Sigler, Madelyn Kientz, Logan Marshall-Green, Lola Reid, Troy Johnson, TV Carpio Jeremy Ray Taylor, Arturo Del Puerto.

This show has been amazing from the start! It was a show I just couldn’t let go. Not to mention the excellent marks on all levels. The actors were fantastic and the script kept us going the whole time. The cinematography of the show is also eye-catching. So far, I have streamed all 9 episodes and can’t wait to see many more in the future! Tell us what you think of the show.

18:30 – SWANS REJECTS THE OFFER OF THE RAVENS

Tom Morris reports …

Sydney rejected Adelaide’s improved offer for Jordan Dawson.

The Crows had staged a pick swap with the Western Bulldogs that would have given the Swans 17 picks, but that was turned down on Tuesday.

That leaves the Crows and Swans at square one, with the Bulldogs looking at other options involving 17, including with Richmond.

4:15 p.m. – THE PORT SETS A MINIMUM PRICE FOR THE RUCK

Tom Morris reports …

Port Adelaide will not allow Peter Ladhams to be traded for anything less than a first round selection.

Foxfooty.com.au Understand that a first-round pick in 2021 or a future prime will satisfy Power, who are also happy to be back with Ladhams for the final year of his contract next season.

Ladhams have a final deal worth around $ 400,000 in 2022, but are aware the club are keen to advance Sam Hayes’ development after winning Port’s Best and Fairest SANFL.

The return of Mitch Georgiades to the senior squad is also looming, which will tighten the competition for places at Alberton. As reported by foxfooty.com.au On Monday morning, Sydney and Hawthorn are planning a play for Ladhams, whose management is seeking the market to find a suitable buyer.

If the Swans like the Ladhams, they could offer a future first round and support each other to finish in the top four in 2022.

Likewise, Hawthorn is fortunate enough to own three of the top 25 picks at the moment and could pack several picks for a teenager.

The Hawks are looking for a player to replace Jon Ceglar, who has piqued Geelong’s interest.

Ladhams is keen to be the number one ruckman, with Scott Lycett certain to enter 2022 as Ken Hinkley’s first-choice big man.

3:50 p.m. – THE RAVENS WAIT FOR THE SWANS RESPONSE AFTER THE FIRST ROUND CHOICE OFFER

Tom Morris reports …

Adelaide is awaiting a response from Sydney after offering a first-round pick to Jordan Dawson.

Foxfooty.com.au Understood that the Crows arranged a pick swap with the Western Bulldogs that would give them the 17 pick, but told Sydney they would only make that deal if No 17 was enough for Dawson.

The proposal was submitted to the Swans on Monday evening and has yet to be accepted.

If Sydney rejects him, the Dogs will likely look to discuss Pick 17 with other clubs – such as Richmond – leaving the Crows and Swans at square one.

Adelaide would back a first round for a player who has had a good year of football is enough, but Sydney’s response so far has been that they think Dawson is worthy of a better draft pick, potentially even until in the top 10.

13:45 – PIES ADDS KREUGER TO 2021 FIRST PLAYER TRADE

Collingwood executed another trade, this time becoming the first team to add a player this trade period, winning Nathan Kreuger of Geelong.

Foxfooty.com.au confirmed the deal was made on Tuesday afternoon with the Magpies making a late pick swap to add the big one, who was primarily a defenseman with the Cats but is likely to play forward in black and white.

Collingwood sent in pick 41 and won Kreuger plus pick 55 in the deal.

This means Geelong’s draft hand is 30, 32, 34, and 41, plus whatever they get for Jordan Clark (assuming they trade it), while the Magpies have 22, 36, 43. , 46, 48, 55 and 58.

13:15 – SWANS ‘REQUIREMENTS FOR THE “BEST PLAYER ON THE MARKET” REVEALED

Sydney believes Jordan Dawson is “the best player on the market” during this trading period, saying he would go into the top 10 in the draft if he was available.

Dawson has requested a trade with South Australia and is keen to join the Crows, Swans general manager of football Charlie Gardiner advocating for a strong comeback on radio this morning.

“Our view is that he is arguably the best player in the AFL market right now, and it is certainly not surprising that there has been extreme interest from both clubs. ‘Adelaide,’ Gardiner told SEN’s Whateley.

“We believe that it is only fair and reasonable that we expected strong compensation for him and we will work to find a fair deal that values him appropriately given that he is 24 years old, that he is entering. in the prime of life and finished third in our best and fairer in a team that won 15 games.

“He was ranked as one of the most efficient players in the competition in the second half of the year, we offered him a very solid long term deal.

“We have a sense of the market and there was clearly significant interest in Jordan and we expected (the Adelaide deal) to be important and attractive to him.”

Fremantle’s Adam Cerra is set to go for the highest price of a trade this year, with Carlton expected to pay at least 6 points for the young midfielder, the Swans are in negotiations with Adelaide.

The Crows have choices 4 and 23 and Sydney will not accept the latter; Instead, Adelaide hopes to acquire the Western Bulldogs’ 17 pick and base the deal on theater.

“I’m not going to get drawn into comparisons, our point is that if you had a top 10 selection in this year’s draft and ended up with Jordan Dawson and the player he was this year and that it will be next year, you ‘I’ll be very happy about that,’ Gardiner said in response to comparisons with Cerra.

“There is always uncertainty with the draft selections, there is not a lot of uncertainty with Jordan Dawson at the moment.”

8:00 AM – “IT’S NOT OVER”: THE BOMBSHELL NEALE TRADE STILL ON THE MAPS

Football journalist Sam McClure believes Brisbane Lions star Lachie Neale may still be leaving the club this commercial period.

Neale pledged his commitment to the Lions last month after a shocking revelation that he was considering returning to Fremantle for family reasons despite having two years left in Brisbane’s contract.

But according to McClure, the decision of the 2020 Brownlow medalist could still be considered.

Ask the 3Aw Sports dayOn Monday night, if he was considering Neale’s business connection when making the list of AFL’s greatest stories of the year, Essendon legend Matthew Lloyd said: “That he was out, and now back. ? “

McClure added: “And maybe still outside… it’s not over yet.”

In what should be a quiet commercial period in terms of player movement, the great Kane Cornes of Port Adelaide said Neale’s move would add some glamor to it.

“Look at this space, this is the deal we have to make,” he said. AFL Commercial Radio Tuesday morning.

“It would be amazing if this one bounced back again despite saying he was sticking around.”

6:00 AM – HOW DOGS CAN HELP RAVENS SWAN COLLAR

A choice swap with the Western Bulldogs could help Adelaide secure her No.1 goal this trade season.

The Crows have previously discussed a trade with Sydney involving Jordan Dawson, who has named Adelaide as his preferred destination for 2022 and beyond.

After offering Dawson an “attractive long-term deal,” according to Sydney football boss Charlie Gardiner, to stay in New South Wales, the Swans now appear poised to play hard at the trading table.

Age reported the Swans had indicated they believed Dawson deserved a top-five pick, but the Crows have already made it clear they intend to take Pick 4 – their first round – in this year’s draft. Adelaide’s second round selection is Pick 23, but Sydney at this point will not accept that selection as a cornerstone of the deal.

Foxfooty.com.au reported on Monday that the Crows were keen to acquire the Bulldogs’ Pick 17 as it could help them close a trade with Sydney and officially secure Dawson.

With the Bulldogs keen to acquire later draft picks to rack up points to match an inevitably early offer on father-son prospect Sam Darcy, the Crows could also use a combination of their 2021 draft picks (Picks 23, 37 and / or 44), as well as future choices, to encourage the Dogs to make a deal. They could then send Pick 17 to the Swans to form the backbone of a deal with Dawson – although it remains to be seen whether Sydney would accept that selection.

“I think it’s important that everyone knows he was and is a big part of our future,” Swans general manager Tom Harley said on the club’s website.

“We had big plans for Jordan and that was reflected, certainly from an offer we submitted to Jordan, so if there is to be a negotiation there, we expect that it is respectful and reflects his position in our club and position in the competition and potential.

Dawson was one of the AFL’s most improved players of 2021, playing all 23 Sydney games, averaging 22.3 eliminations, a career-high and placing third in Best and Fairest of games. Swans.

He played 64 games for the Swans after being drafted from Robe with Pick 56 in the 2015 National Draft.

Sony has a “gigantic list of things” they want to bring to the PS5 through firmware updates

PS5 now available on BT for the customers. AO restocking has just been exhausted. Read on for more information.

The PS5 launched in November 2020, but supply issues and a global semiconductor shortage have slowed production of Sony’s next-gen console. New stock is always hard to find, and when it does show up, the PS5 sells out almost instantly.

September was a mixed bag for PS5 restocking, but was still much better than June and July. Although not as good as in August, we still saw some big drops in Very, Smyths Toys, BT, EE, Argos, Amazon and Game. We had 10 drops to complete the month of September. The question now is: will October kick off with a bang?

If you’re still looking for a PS5, you’ve come to the right place. Our liveblog is here to give you the latest information on Playstation 5 restockings from all major UK retailers, both online and in store, as well as providing details on release rumors, the latest PS5 games and accessories to buy.

Can you play PS4 games on PS5?

You can play most of your PS4 games on your new PS5 console

(Getty Images)

While waiting for more PS5 stock to drop, it should be remembered that the vast majority of PS4 games are possible on PS5.

As for the digital versions of the games, you will be able to purchase them through PlayStation Store on your PS4, then download and play them later on PS5.

If you have the PS5 Disc Edition, you will also be able to insert your PS4 discs into it and play them that way.

It goes without saying that this only applies to the disc version of the PS5, as the digital edition does not have a physical disc slot.

We have compiled a list of our favorites PS4 games, most of which have fallen in price since the release of the PS5.

How to get a PS5 voucher code from BT

BT helps customers secure a PS5 whenever new inventory drops

(PA Media)

BT tries to give its customers an extra helping hand to secure a PS5 console.

To avoid the website overload that often occurs at other online retailers when the stock of the PS5 goes down, BT sends unique promotional codes to its customers.

If you are a BT TV customer or BT Sport subscriber, for example, you can apply to receive a PS5 voucher code.

Codes are emailed quite rarely, but once you receive one you can use it to purchase a PS5 the next time the BT the store has a restocking.

You still have to pay the normal price for it, but using one of these codes will definitely give you an edge when trying to secure a PS5 console.

PS5 available from AO

Here’s a reminder of our top AO tip – it only works on Google Chrome on the desktop.

Copy the Product ID from the PS5 and save it in a safe place.

Navigate to a random item on the AO website.

Right click the “Buy Now” button on the random item and click “Inspect Item”. In the Item Inspector, change the Product ID to the Product ID of the PS5.

Are you also looking for an Xbox Series X?

(The independent)

Overall, the PS5 has been easier to obtain than the Xbox Series X, which has seen fewer restockings in the UK in recent months.

The less powerful Xbox Series S, on the other hand, is widely available at a number of retailers, including Amazon, Curries, and Argos.

When will ShopTo restock the PS5?

ShopTo last restocked the PS5 on September 18 and prior to that on September 12, September 8, and September 5.

The video game retailer also had three PS5 drops in August and two in July.

Based on these figures, it appears that the availability of the PS5 from ShopTo has steadily increased over the past few months.

While that doesn’t guarantee a drop in PS5 today, we’ll make sure to let you know if it does.

When will BT restock the PS5?

BT restocked the PS5 three times in September.

The phone service provider was one of the most consistent PS5 sellers last month, with almost one restocking per week.

We don’t know if BT will restock the PS5 this week, but there are rumors suggesting it could.

Follow the blog for more live updates.

When will John Lewis restock the PS5?

John lewis last restocked the PS5 on September 28 and prior to that on September 24.

The retailer was not particularly active in August, with just one restocking earlier this month.

New rumors however suggest John lewis can receive a number of PS5 consoles on October 15, in disc and digital editions.

According to the official PS5 Stock UK Twitter account, some of the new consoles may even drop before next week.

The Kentucky Wildcats face the Florida Gators tonight at 6 p.m. ET at Kroger Field in Lexington, Ky. You can watch the game on ESPN, stream it online using Watch ESPN, or listen to the radio via the British sports network.

The Cats enter this game as 7.5-point underdogs and once again look to upset the Gators. Florida lead the all-time 53-18 series and have won 33 of the last 34 games.

That being said, we all know this is a new generation of Kentucky football that has the talent and the tools to beat this Florida team. The Cats won at Gainesville during the 2018, while the last three contests at Lexington have been decided by a score.

The Gators looked impressive at the start of the season, but the Cats have a defense that should keep them in any game as long as they play at the level we saw at Columbia last week.

The main thing UK need to focus on in this game is taking care of the ball. If they can do that, expect it to be a very close game at the end of the day, with Kentucky having a chance to beat the Gators at Lexington for the first time since 1986.

Are you excited !? Check out some of these pre-game reads while you wait for the game to begin:

Now let’s start this party!

Go cats!

In September, Pamela Brown was appointed the ECB’s first EDI director. To celebrate Black History Month, Pamela shares her thoughts, experiences and future ambitions for a game-wide commitment to make cricket an inclusive place for all.

“What got me to this point, working at the ECB, is lifelong learning from a range of roles, people I have met and a wide range of people. range of influences that have equipped me to help bring about positive change, to truly make cricket a game for all people.

“The ECB, like many other organizations, will be challenged in its commitment to be fair, diverse and inclusive. While we still have a long way to go, in my short time here I have encountered a deep commitment to making the necessary changes and a desire to challenge the status quo. It is this collective commitment and dynamism that will help shape the future narrative of the game.

“As Black History Month begins, with different meanings for different people within the black and biracial community, pride is expressed in different ways. For many, Black History Month is a way to reflect on the diverse histories of people of African and Caribbean descent, taking note of the achievements and contributions to the social, sporting, political, scientific, economic and cultural development of the country. UK.

“Its importance cannot be underestimated as history shapes our lives and influences our perspectives. However, Black History Month is not without its opponents. Some argue that it is impossible to teach black history in a month, and that it is symbolic – there should be a big push for integration into the mainstream education system. As such, it is encouraging to see Wales leading the way as the UK’s first nation to engage every child in learning the history and experiences of people of Black, Asian and ethnically diverse descent. We need to make sure that this is an ongoing process where we are faced with information and education that challenges our view of the world. At the ECB, we will continue this education both internally and externally and spotlight EDI in everything we do – not just in this celebratory month.

“A colleague once likened this need for education and change to a garden hose. Imagine watering the garden (if you’re lucky enough to have one) and the water doesn’t come out – you go hunting with purpose and intention. You find a big “crease”, you straighten it, but the water is still not clear. This is when you realize that there are a lot of kinks in the garden hose and until we recognize them and fix them all, the water will not be clear.

“One of my heroes – whom I was fortunate to meet as an undergraduate student – was James Baldwin. He was born in 1924 in Harlem and was an openly gay black author and activist. That said, he would likely disapprove of the description as he despised arbitrary labels. His political writing and activism earned him another label – that of radical. But for me, I just want to applaud the man whose jewels of wisdom remain with me and for the intellect that still challenges my thinking.

“A television interviewer once asked Baldwin to describe the challenges he faced early in his career as a ‘black and impoverished homosexual’, to which Baldwin laughed and responded in a satirical manner. : “I thought I would have hit the jackpot.”

“We are never one thing, we have a multitude of facets that all need to be embraced and celebrated. I look forward to working together to make cricket a game that is relevant and where people from all walks of life feel both welcome and a sense of belonging.

Over the next few months, the ECB will celebrate all members of our cricket community by sharing the positive work being done across all levels of the game. Throughout Black History Month, on ECB social media and From England Cricket (see below) we will be sharing stories of our Black and Biiracial Cricket family members and what they are ‘proud to be’ – we would love to hear yours.

Staying Online: How to Navigate Digital Higher Education by Robert Ubell

Published September 2021, Routledge.

I grew up in a college family. My father was a teacher. Many of the adults in my life were academics. Some of these academics also taught at my father’s college. But most of them were my father’s colleagues from other schools. They would come to visit him on campus or at our house, or we would see them at conferences. (Dad frequently combined family and work trips).

My childhood and adolescence allowed me to appreciate the value of a university community. An understanding that colleagues and friends can be the same people. And this academia encourages these friendships to develop with colleagues near and far.

Over the past 15 years or so, Bob Ubell has been one of my most appreciated “distant” colleagues. As I have found my voice as a writer on higher education, Bob has always been a source of encouragement and wisdom. He’s the kind of person to reach out with a short note of congratulations and praise. Over the course of my career, I have continually turned to Bob to help me understand the role of online learning in the larger history of higher education.

For all of these reasons, I am so happy to share with you how thrilled I was to read Bob’s latest book, Staying Online: How to Navigate Digital Higher Education.

Stay on the line is Bob in book form. The book is wise, intelligent, funny, modest, direct, personal, insightful, and easy to read.

Stay on the line provides a timely analysis of the main challenges and trends related to online, blended and digital learning. The book contextualizes these trends in the history of how universities are navigating the pandemic.

The book draws a series of insightful lessons from the history of online education and recent developments around COVID-19 and distance learning, to chart a progressive and optimistic path for teaching and learning in colleges and universities in our country.

In a concise and quick 158 pages, Stay on the line covers a large part of the territory. Starting with what colleges and universities have learned while trying to maintain academic continuity during the pandemic, the book then addresses an array of issues and trends related to online learning.

In a series of short chapters, the book highlights the fundamental ideas of science learning that underpin course design and effective teaching. Issues relating to organizational structures and institutional investments to improve the quality and scale of online programs are covered.

The pros and cons of nonprofit colleges and universities collaborating with for-profit companies (OPMs and platforms) to fund, develop, and manage online degrees are also explored in Stay on the line.

What I really like about Stay on the line This is how Bob integrates his analysis of the present and the future of online learning into his professional career. Bob is not afraid to talk about times when he was unsure of his abilities as an academic, such as telling his own story of teaching online. His experience working with an instructional designer and a team of non-teaching educators to create an online course is one of the best examples I have read of the benefits of online education for educator development.

In a chapter on large-scale online education, Bob talks about his initial reservations about MOOCs – and how his ideas changed as he watched (and participated in) the evolution of online learning. With a long career as an educator and leader in the online learning space, and as an academic and change student in higher education, Bob is uniquely positioned to provide our community with actionable insights. .

Stay on the line can be read as a call to colleges and universities to place e-learning on an equal footing with residential learning in developing long-term institutional strategies.

Skeptics and e-learning champions would benefit from spending time with Bob and reading Stay on the line.

What are you reading?

Arguably the epicenter of campus culture is finding the best places to eat and discovering the culinary experiences that one enjoys the most. Fortunately, there are several food blogs on campus dedicated to helping students on this journey. Meet SluFoodEatz, Spoon_SLU and ConversationalEats.

SluFoodEatz

Who manages the account?

Five people manage this account. Our names are Mary Leonardi, Zoë Mical, Skylar Rapp, Megan Woods and Liz Golinski. We are all freshmen.

What was the motivation behind the creation of this blog?

The count started our second night [on campus], the first time we went to the large dining room. Every time we ate on campus, we rated foods from different places and thought it would be fun to report on it. We love to try new dishes and it’s a great way to start a conversation and meet new people.

What is the purpose of the account?

We just like to rate the food we eat on campus. We love posting great things to eat, but also letting people know what to avoid.

What is your favorite dish that you have presented so far?

All from Fresh Gatherings [is] definitely such a victory. Fresh Gatherings offers a cafe-like experience with great staff and real fresh food. It has plenty of healthier options and is a fun adventure off the main campus. But, we also love the ice cream in the Great Hall.

What has been your worst culinary experience on campus?

The place of macaroni and cheese [at Grand Market in the Busch Student Center] was not pleasant and has “Costco brand nacho cheese”. Also, Swirl: Both times we went we wanted smoothie bowls but they ran out and the smoothies we had were watered down.

How would you describe your account in three words?

Our account is fun, creative and informative.

Learn more about SluFoodEatz

We would love to start exploring the restaurants around the Saint Louis area! We also want to start receiving submissions, so follow us @slufoodeatz on Instagram.

Spoon_SLU

Who manages the account?

Junior Nicolette Schnettgoeke (Editorial director)

Catherine Cline Senior (Marketing Director)

Lizzy Payne senior (director of photography)

Junior Madison Campbell (video director)

What was the motivation behind the creation of this blog?

Our page is part of a national blog called Spoon University. The inspiration was to create a food blog accessible to students. For SLU in particular, our inspiration comes from supporting local STL businesses and sharing our own food nerd ideas.

What is the purpose of the account?

We love to cover recipes, local restaurants and eating places, as well as random reviews on specific foods or cookbooks. For most of our contributors, this is a fun way to share our food photos and unique food experiences, and to get to know more foodies.

How would you describe your account in three words?

Our account is fun, accessible, and community driven.

What is your favorite dish that you have presented so far?

My favorite food we featured is @beastbbqstl. They are such cool people and they make crazy food.

Learn more about Spoon_SLU

The only thing I have to add is that the STL food scene is so underrated and I love to point out how amazing all the local places are. The restaurant / cafe community is so kind and welcoming [and that is] really something we are grateful for.

–––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– – ––––––––––––––––––––––––––

ConversationalEat

Who manages the account?

Second year students Nidhi Shettigar, Lynn Pham and Zoha Ahmed manage this account.

What was the motivation behind the creation of this blog?

During our first year, the three of us were roommates and would order random food late at night and have what we called ‘friendship chats’ or ‘conversational meals’. This inspired the name of the account (@conversationaleats). The motivation behind the account was that the three of us enjoyed trying new foods and wanted to share them somewhere.

We also thought it would be unique and interesting to continue the page while we are also at home away from school. We were all from different places and the food page is a way to share something away from each other. Since the three of us live in different cities, we post food from all over Chicago, IL, Orange County, California, and the Bay Area, California.

What is the purpose of the account?

The purpose of this account is to present different dishes, atmospheres and restaurant experiences, as well as to share our love of food. We also provide information on food, service, environment and the overall experience. Sometimes we post food stories or campus events like Fresh Gatherings events and food trucks. When we are at home, we also offer food and drink that we prepare.

How would you describe your account in three words?

Fun, vibey and enlightening.

What is your favorite dish that you have presented so far?

  • Zoha Yolk in Chicago
  • Nidhi – Dave’s Hot Chicken in San Diego, CA
  • Lynn – The Laguna Coffee Company in Laguna Beach, CA because I love trying new coffees and this is by far my favorite coffee that I have tried at home

Learn more about ConversationalEats

The way our account is set up is that we post a photo of the food and in the caption we describe our orders, the restaurant / ambiance and any recommendations, then rate the food, AKA the “conversation”. The Instagram account was created less than a year ago (March 12, 2021) and has grown steadily since; it’s almost 1,000 subscribers. While this is just something we do for fun and to document memories, it is exciting to be contacted by companies to post reviews of their products and foods.
